Yes, you can advertise without a website, and for some businesses it works well. But it depends on where you place the ad and what you want the person to do after seeing it.

Here's what each platform allows, what you miss without a site, and how to decide for your kind of business.

On Instagram and Facebook: ads that open WhatsApp

Meta has an ad type that, when tapped, opens a WhatsApp chat with your business directly. It doesn't go through any page: the person sees the ad, taps the button and messages you.

  • Where it runs: in Facebook and Instagram feeds and stories.
  • What you need: a Facebook page, an ad account, and WhatsApp Business connected to your page, with a business number.
  • Who it works best for: businesses that sell by chatting, with products or services that are easy to explain in a chat.

If your sale closes on WhatsApp, this ad can work without a website. What you do need is someone who answers quickly, because every chat that comes in is a person who already showed interest.

On Google: possible, with limits

Google is different, because people search for something specific and expect to find information. There are two routes without your own site:

  • Call ads: they show a button to call you. A landing page is optional, but Google asks for a web address that shows your phone number to verify the ad.
  • Campaigns using your Google Business Profile: in Performance Max campaigns, Google lets you use your Business Profile as the landing page if you don't have a website.

Either way, a complete Google Business Profile does a lot of the work: hours, photos, location, reviews and phone.

What you miss without a website

Advertising without a site isn't wrong, but it's worth knowing what's left out:

  • The person who compares. Many people see the ad and, before messaging you, search your name. If they find nothing but your Instagram, they decide with less information.
  • Measuring what works. With a site you can see how many people came from each ad and what they did. With chats only, you count by hand.
  • A place that's yours. If everything depends on one platform, everything depends on its rules. I explained it in Instagram isn't yours.

How to decide for your business

A simple rule to sort out the decision:

  • You sell cheap, fast and by chat (food, short-catalog products, simple appointments): you can start with ads that open WhatsApp and a good Instagram profile.
  • You sell something people think about before buying (professional services, renovations, equipment, treatments): first a simple site that explains what you do, how you work and roughly what it costs. Ads after.
  • You serve customers at a physical location: complete your Google Business Profile before paying for any ad. It's free and it's the first thing people see when they find you on the map.

Before you pay for your first ad

Check these three things, website or not:

  1. Who answers the messages, and how fast? An ad that brings chats nobody answers is money lost.
  2. What does a person see if they search your name? Do it yourself on Google and on Instagram.
  3. How will you know if it worked? Even by writing down in a sheet how many chats came in and how many bought.

My advice: if you're going to invest in advertising, invest first in the place people land. It can be a well-attended WhatsApp chat, a complete Business Profile or a simple website. The ad only brings the person; what they find when they arrive is what decides the sale.
