A digital loyalty card is the classic punch card, but on the customer's phone. They collect their purchases, see how close they are to the reward, and it doesn't get lost in their wallet.
Why rewarding returning customers pays off
A classic study by Frederick Reichheld of Bain & Company found that raising customer retention by 5% increased profits by 25% to 95%, depending on the industry. It's an old study and the range is wide, but the idea holds: a customer who already knows you buys without needing to be convinced again.
A loyalty club doesn't bring new customers. What it does is give the one who already came a reason to come back to you and not to the place next door.
What goes wrong with the cardboard card
- It gets lost, wet or left at home.
- It gets faked with a similar stamp.
- It tells you nothing: you don't know how many customers have one, how many come back, or who stopped coming.
How it works on the phone
The customer scans a QR code at the register and joins the club with their name and phone number. Every time they buy, they request their stamp from their phone and whoever takes payment approves it. When they reach the goal, the reward appears for them to redeem.
- No app to download. It opens in the browser.
- Someone at the register approves the stamp, so nobody gives themselves one.
- One stamp per customer per day, to prevent cheating.
What reward to offer
The reward should be something the customer wants and that doesn't hurt you. Some ideas that work:
- The tenth coffee free, or dessert with the sixth lunch.
- A product with a good margin for you.
- Double stamps on slow days, to move the week along.
The goal has to look reachable. If the reward comes at 20 purchases, many people never start.
The rule you don't break
The club rewards purchases and visits, never reviews. Giving a stamp or a reward in exchange for a Google review goes against Google Maps policy, which prohibits offering incentives for reviews. They're two separate things: the club so people come back, and the review QR code so they share their opinion.
How I do it
My loyalty club runs on a QR sign at the register. You manage the reward, the goal, double stamps and gift stamps from your dashboard, without asking me. With 1 sign it costs $75 for the six-month plan, $150 for Essential or $250 for Professional, which also gives you your customer list. You can try the sample club from your phone.
What you can do today: think of your ten best customers. What reward would give them a reason to come back one more time this month? If you know the answer, you've got half the club figured out.
